Living Authentically: How to Focus Amid Life’s Chaos

Mindset + Growth

As a mother of two—my son, who just turned 8, and my soon-to-be 6-year-old daughter—I’ve come to appreciate the importance of mindfulness in both my personal and professional life. The world we live in is filled with distractions, and with the rising conversations around ADHD in women, I’ve started to see some traits in myself that impact how I engage with my children and my work. Whether it’s experiencing a lack of focus or the tendency to hyper-focus on projects, I’ve realised these can be both a superpower and a struggle.

When I immerse myself in a creative project—be it designing a homepage, creating graphics, or crafting an eBook—I often find myself in a state of flow, where time seems to disappear. This is my happy place, a space where I can channel my reflector energy from human design to help and support my clients. However, there are moments when that flow is interrupted by the realities of motherhood, like school pick-ups, and I grapple with the challenge of shifting my focus away from my creative endeavours.

The Power of Being Present

In a world where we’re constantly juggling multiple responsibilities, it’s easy to fall into the trap of multitasking. For years, I adhered to the belief that working on several projects simultaneously was the most effective approach. However, this mindset only led to feelings of overwhelm and a diminished sense of productivity. It wasn’t until I delved into mindfulness, particularly after reading “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle, that I began to appreciate the value of living in the moment.

Being present with my children has become a priority for me. I cherish the time spent with them, whether it’s guiding my son through his homework or engaging in imaginative play with my daughter. But I must acknowledge that I’m not perfect; life’s distractions and the lure of social media can sometimes pull my attention away. Yet, I continuously strive to bring my full self to our interactions, learning as much from them as they do from me.

Finding Balance and Clarity

This mindfulness extends beyond my role as a parent; it’s woven into my business as well. As my career has evolved from being a virtual assistant and online business manager to a design and launch strategist, I’ve embraced the importance of focusing on what I do best. I love spending hours in the creative process, where ideas flow freely, and I can visualise innovative solutions for my clients. This focus not only brings clarity to my work but also enables me to add value to my clients’ projects.

However, I recognise the need for balance. While hyper-focus can drive my productivity, it can also make it difficult to step away and tend to family responsibilities. This constant juggle is a reality for many of us, especially as we navigate the complexities of motherhood and entrepreneurship.

A Challenge for All of Us

I invite you to consider the impact of mindfulness in your own life. Rather than being busy for the sake of being busy, practice focusing on one task at a time and give it your all. Embrace the moments, whether in parenting or business, and witness how it transforms your mindset and productivity.

Remember, it’s okay not to be perfect. We all have days when distractions win, but that doesn’t define our worth. By being present, forgiving ourselves, and celebrating the small wins, we can cultivate a more fulfilling and authentic life.
